Calling all budding designers!

Sidedoor graphic design studio is very excited to be running their inaugural student design competition; The Golden Egg. Only open to secondary school students, the idea of the competition is to encourage up and coming designers and give them a chance to participate in a real life project.

The winning design will be produced in a real card game that will be distributed as a limited edition giveaway. The winning student will receive their own copy of the game to keep. Of course the cash prize of $200 to the winning student will be an incentive for many however, it is hoped that the experience gained will be of just as much value!

Entry is free and designs will need to be submitted by March 7, 2012. The winner will be judged by a panel of designers at Sidedoor graphic design studio and announced on March 9, 2012. Top entries will be posted online and the winner will receive a cash prize of $200 and their own copy of the game, The Golden Egg.

Interested? Email your inquiries to info@sidedoor.com.au or call Sidedoor on 9095 849.

E-Focus Annual Report

This came off the press right amongst the end of the 2011 madness. Even though it’s a little delayed we wanted to give it the credit deserved with a little showcase. {JL}

3 countries in 3 weeks!

I’m back after 5 wonderful weeks away, wow how times flies! It’s great to be back in the studio, though eerily quiet without my sidedoor sidekicks, Jess and Adinda still enjoying their holidays.

What an awesome experience my hubby and I had traveling around Vietnam, Cambodia & Thailand for 3 weeks.

We started in Vietnam, where we played chicken with the traffic, visited the Cu Chi tunnels, took a trip through a floating market, saw the Notre Dame Cathedral and other fab French style architecture.

We then traveled up the Mekong Delta and into Cambodia, a land of friendly and resilient people, beautiful sights and amazing temples – Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples being a big highlight of our trip. Along the way we visited local villages, met the people  and sampled their food and wares.

Then onto Thailand where we visited the Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi, housing tigers that are cared for by monks – another major highlight of our trip was getting to feed 3 week old tiger cubs… just gorgeous!

Other highlights included:

  • Visiting the Killing Fields & Tuol Sleng torture prison in Cambodia – a very eye opening & emotional day.
  • A day tour to the stunning Phi Phi Island and surrounding islands & beaches, including the beach from the movie “the Beach”.
  • Experiencing the many fantastic markets and bargaining with the locals, including the Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok and the Russian Market in Phnom Penh.
  • Walking the Kwae (Kwai) bridge, built by prisoners of war in Thailand.

It was a great trip to refresh and experience some very different cultures. We saw many amazing things that will stick in our memories forever. Here are a few snaps from our travels…

What a Wonderful Week of Work Experience!

Hi everyone, my name is Helen and this week I was lucky enough to do Work Experience with the Bright Sparks at Sidedoor. What a week I had! Everyone here is so friendly and helpful, and it was such a delight to experience the graphic design industry and have a taste of what it’s like to work in this field. To start off my week at Sidedoor, I was given the very important job of decorating their space for the festive season – their DIY decorations are so gorgeous, and so easy to put to together! I strung a collection of ornaments on a piece of string, and hung them above the doorway – a wonderful Sidedoor christmas welcome to all who came to visit! We also had some spare cardboard boxes and a few decorations left over – so what better to do than make a carboard christmas tree to hang them on? I made a cute little christmas tree out of the rejected cardboard, and we hung the DIY ornaments on it’s branches – we even made a star out of the spare paper to sit on the top of the tree! The miniature cardboard tree now adorns the bench of their office, surrounded by lovely christmas cards they’ve received.
During my time here I was also fortunate enough to get to watch the creative geniuses Adinda and Jess at work, and observe the processes they undergo to achieve the beautiful final products you see. Not only that, I was also granted the chance to have an exclusive insight into something very, very exciting that is coming up. Something new, something vibrant, something that is sure to be exciting and rewarding for all. What is it? Well, that’s a secret that you’ll have to wait to find out!
My next and final project for my time at Sidedoor is to have a go at inventing and creating some Easter fun, something that will engage audiences of all ages and provide some Easter cheer into your lives. It’s a bit early for Easter, I hear you say – but design never sleeps, and this project is a very important one!

My week here at Sidedoor has been wonderful to say the least, and I thank each and every person here for making my time here so throughly enjoyable – I had a blast! I wish everyone a safe and fantastic holiday, a very merry christmas and a happy twenty twelve!

Helen.

P.S – A big thankyou to Wendy for the use of her desk this week while she is off on holiday!

The picture does not do justice to the brightness and beauty of this hot pink. After spending a week working with it, I think I might be going blind!

Deck your space this Christmas

Instead of sending out Christmas cards this festive season, we are encouraging everyone to get back to the basics and use their creative skills. We produced a DIY ornament in two gorgeous spot colours. It is super easy to put together as it’s perforated, pre-scored, ready to stick and comes with it’s own piece of string. Below are a few pics of our handy work, these little guys are on their way to invade letterboxes and we can’t wait to see how they are used to dec out your space! {JL}
